ASK FATHER: Stuck at work for all Sunday obligation Masses

From the ever dependable Fr. Z  at http://wdtprs.com/blog/ :-

"From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

I work 12 hour shifts at a hospital, including 1 weekend a month. This means even Saturday night Mass is out of the question. Is it a sin to miss Mass because I am required to work?

I will assume that there are no more Masses available after your shift within a reasonable distance.   If that assumption is correction, NO, you do not sin by missing Mass in those circumstances.

People are not held to the impossible.  If for the sake of your vocations that job is critically necessary, and therefore you have no flexibility on Sundays, then you are stuck.

However, in many places there are “last chance” Masses.    You want to be sure about your options.   Do some research.

Please share!"

Young people are drawn to the Traditional Latin Mass by its “beauty”

Archbishop Alexander K Sample has said. Speaking during a Pontifical High Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, Archbishop Sample praised Pope Benedict XVI for the “great gift” of Summorum Pontificum – the document that allowed the traditional Mass to be more widely celebrated – and said the “reverence and sacredness” of the old Mass would enrich the Novus Ordo. The Archbishop of Portland, Oregon also noted how many young people were in the congregation, saying: “You are a sign—a great sign—of encouragement and hope for the Church tossed about these days on the troubled waters of secularism and relativism. As they say: you ‘get it.’”

The sermon – which was broadcast live on EWTN – has been widely shared on social media. See:- http://catholicherald.co.uk/news/2018/05/02/video-archbishops-sermon-praising-old-rite-goes-viral/ for the full story.

The Catholic Association Statement on the Alfie Evans Case

April 26, 2018

“It’s confusing and disappointing to see the Catholic leadership in the U.K., both the bishops and lay leaders like Austen Ivereigh of Catholic Voices U.K., abandon Catholic social teaching and split from the Pope by defending the government instead of Alfie and his family. The Church has long been the first and only voice to speak out for truth and defend the vulnerable. True to that legacy, the Pope spoke out in defense of Alfie Evans and the fundamental human rights of his parents to do all they can to save the life of their child. The Pope heroically spoke out for them long before outlets like People magazine were fretting over the fate of this toddler, who is now being held hostage in his hospital and slowly starved to death. The Catholic faithful along with citizens of good will around the world have rallied and stood with the Pope and with Alfie and his parents in defending their rights and defending the beauty of Catholic social teaching – which expressly condemns exactly what the U.K. government is doing: denying Alfie’s parents their rights to what is best for their child and forcing the child to suffer in his last moments.  It is moments such as these that Catholics, especially leaders like Austen Ivereigh, are called to stand apart from the fray and defend the truth even when it contradicts the powers that be. We thank the Pope for his leadership and look to U.K. Catholic leaders to join him in standing for Church teaching.” Ashley McGuire is a Senior Fellow with The Catholic Association

“The parents of Alfie Evans have a natural right to accept the Vatican hospital’s offer to try to extend the life of Alfie and provide more humane care. Baby Alfie and his parents should not be prisoners of a British hospital. The failure of the British Catholic Bishops and so-called leaders like Catholic Voices of England to recognize these simple and basic truths is disgusting and shameful. We urge all faithful Catholics to stand with Pope Francis, who called on the British government to allow Baby Alfie’s parents to seek the alternative treatment that has been generously offered.” Grazie Pozo Christie, M.D. is a Policy Advisor for The Catholic Association.

From BBC News:-

The parents of seriously ill toddler Alfie Evans have lost their latest bid to take him abroad for treatment.

Tom Evans and Kate James wanted to move the 23-month-old from Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital to Rome.

Lawyers for the couple had urged judges to reconsider the case when Alfie kept breathing despite his life support being removed on Monday.

But the Court of Appeal upheld Mr Justice Hayden's earlier High Court ruling.
